Avoid Going Out at Night in Larger Cities. There are about 3.2 Million Puerto Ricans and most of them live in the metro areas San Juan, Ponce, and Mayaguez. During the day, these metro areas are similar to any major city in the U.S. in regards to safety. Most of the crime happens after dark. Avoid going out after dark in these cities - especially into areas with which you are unfamiliar.
What about Old San Juan? Old San Juan is very safe. The nightlife in OSJ is wonderful and Puerto Rico works hard to keep its crown jewel for tourists safe 24/7. There is a little section of houses on the northern side west of the cemetery that is called La Perla (The Pearl). It's really been cleaned up but it's probably best to avoid it because if you were to have trouble, it would be there.
Know Before You Go — Safety
Ben's core safety read holds up: Old San Juan is safe, mind your surroundings after dark, common sense covers the rest. One spot is worth pinning down precisely.
La Perla
